AT&T Circles WDM Vendor Shortlist: Is the Big Fish Ready to Strike?

* As we highlighted in our July 1 RFP Update, we believe each domestic Tier 1 IXC currently has at least one active RFX (RFI-RFP) for next gen WDM transport gear. In our view, AT&T appears to be moving forward most aggressively - "shortlisting" vendors for initial trials in OEM labs.

* We believe AT&T has chosen to begin evaluating Corvis, Lucent and Ciena gear over the next month/so. We expect these trials could last a month or so followed by AT&T selecting a single vendor's equipment for full scale standardization/certification trials at the carrier's labs.

* While we don't expect these trials to translate into deployments until mid-'03, we continue to view a T contract win as a huge technology validation which could provide meaningful revenue visibility ($500M??) and ultimately spark consolidation in the optical networking group.

* During this downturn we are focused on solid "long term" balance sheets and leading product/customer positioning. Visibility is unlikely to improve near term, however risk/reward suggests that patient investors may begin buying a "basket" of optical networking stocks at these levels.
