My post wasn't meant to judge either group of people.

I don't think I "exaggerate" the American way of "I am what I am", and in cases where that includes being overweight, there is a "So what?" attitude that goes with it. The uniquely individualistic way of life in the US probably contributes to this. I have seen seriously overweight people in the US wearing t-shirts that say "Proud to be Fat" and "Fat is Beautiful". I personally know quite a few people who say "This is my body and it has loads of fat, so what?".

In any case, I guess you would agree with me that there is no social pressure for the 60%+ overweight part of the population to lose weight. Instead, there is a move for the country as a whole to adjust to THEM - larger seats in public transportation, etc.

the vain, self-obsorbed "cult of body worship" you describe in France sounds at least as unhealthy

That is not in all of France, but only the SOUTH of France, the infamous "French Riviera" where yours truly lives around the year, among the aged playboys and their pretty playthings. It is an extension of "big money" beach culture, I'm afraid. Not all of France is like this, though.

Yes, I agree with you that it is far from healthy. There are so many women with breast enhancements and silicone lips here in summer that it the place looks like the Baywatch set.

Ah well, to each her own, I guess. Personally, I go for yoga and gym. What they can't cure is just the natural aging process, which I don't intend to tamper with...
