Only to the most anal German. Which, sadly, many Germans are. Platt Deutsch is part of their heritage. Just as Hoch Deutsch. Europeans, in general, are pretty anal. The US is a good model for them.

Hoch Deutsch and Platt(more appropriately "flat" than low) Deutsch are very different. If for no other reason, Platt Deutsch has the concept of a "w". English derived from Platt Deutsch. Look at the word for "two". Hoch Deutsch it is "zwie". But Platt Deutsch has it as "twee". Which is closer? There are other differences. An English speaker has very little problem with Platt Deutsch. Hoch Deutsch is another thing.
