Outside of my long term core position, I trade in stock, leaps and sometimes short term options. I try to keep my average cost on the leaps down (buy low/sell high, an original idea).

But you are right, 1/4 of a point here or there won't make that much difference if Intel goes on to new highs before their earnings report, as I suspect it will. It's just part of the game to try to buy at the best price, more a matter of pride than anything else.
