KRY & HL: Decree won't impact recent CVG contracts

Venezuela, Sep 24, 2003 (BNamericas.com via COMTEX) -- Venezuela's mining chamber Camiven put out a statement saying a government decree ordering the review of mining contracts with state conglomerate CVG would not affect recent agreements signed with companies such as Canada's Crystallex (Amex: KRY) and Hecla (NYSE: HL) of the US.

The decree marks a continuation of the mines and energy ministry's policy to centralize the handling of mining rights in the Guayana region of the country, the statement said.

Some media reports had suggested the measure could affect the interests of the North American companies, but Camiven said the only contracts up for review would be those awarded before July 15, 1996.

The measure is designed to crack down on illegal mining.
