Greetings today JF,

1) Last point on Paul Allen - The outside the computer industry stuff I never pay attention too, and don't care because it has no affect on what you and I are interested in. I would like to know more about his involvement in Metatools if he is involved. I know you know that to put money in to something and running it are very different and that is what he tends to do now in the "industry". c/net - he only invested startup money... don't argue with me on this one... I have been friends with the Dir. of Marketing for many years.

2) RAS market - Ascend is a major player. BOCI is also getting into this market with the partnership with ACC (check the press release).

3) Hayes vs. Motorola - still disagree with you. Motorola is on every major shelf while Hayes is inconsistant at best and will fail due to poor management. Why promote Hayes here... they will not be successful.

4) Boca flash upgradable - two different issues here. The 56K units are flash upgradable. This topic went back two posts that stated Rockwell screwed the pooch and Boca is in trouble because they are based on Rockwell. The units can be upgraded throughout time just like the USR units. Both Rockwell AND USR have many of the same connectivity issues at 56K. USR is a great PR machine and hasn't publisized their problems like the Motorola. Motorola follows this Baldridge quality seal thing that the received some time ago.

5) The bigger issue: Standards
The standards issue will ultimatly resolve this tit-for-tat 56 issue fairly soon. USR has the most to loose. Why. The enjoy about 30%
(Dataquest) of the retail shelf space but only a handfull of OEM customers. Most of the system manufacturers are with Rockwell/Lucent (Compaq/HP/Acer/IBM/AST/DEC/Toshiba/NEC to name a few). These guys are into standards. Rockwell and Lucent have a little might and political power behind them. My money goes with history. Rockwell is the major player when in comes to working the standards throughtout the industry like Intel.

Back to Boca. Boca as stated before has significant OEM business worldwide. They must pay attention to standards. Diamond is also in the K56Flex camp for the same reasons.
