The disks have to be somewhere. NAS is by definition storage that's out on the net--Network Attached Storage, storage that is (logically, from a user's point of view) attached to the network instead of to a specific computer or pair of computers. It's still a stack of disks, it's just not directly attached to your friendly neighborhood web server.
