I am not so sure about the eternity of torment for the non-believer's that is so popular in the church. A very careful study of the Word shows that the burning pit is reserved for the devil and his angels. The non-believer's are indeed thrown in there but it says they are burned up like chaff, poof and gone. The devil and his angels being made of sterner stuff do not burn up but remain in the pit. This makes more sense to me in light of God's attributes. I can't think imagine a God who said "forgive them for they know not what they do" would then turn around and torment the same people for eternity. It's a contradiction. God being full of mercy IMO would not do that. After all the purpose of this age is for everyone to decide who they want to serve, Jesus Christ or themselves. That's the issue. I am not convinced that God wants to punish for eternity those people that chose to serve themselves by choosing to stay under the dominion of the devil. Read Psalms 37 as an example. The wicked are burned up like the grass and are no more. It is also in keeping with the principle set forth in the word that to whom much is given much is required. The accountability for the knowledge one possesses is more severe for the devil and his angels because they chose to do evil with a full knowledge and understanding we can't imagine or understand. But the nonbeliever who went his/her whole life rejecting Jesus because they were convinced he did not exist chose that path through ignorance (having been deceived), not knowledge. They were deceived and therefore receive only a few "lashes".

Now Chris, remember your blood pressure <gg>. I know that a convincing argument can be made either way. But the eternal torment view is not in keeping with God's attribute of being merciful to the unjust so I have to give my view more weight because IMO it is more consistent with God's character. His judgements and punishments are just. Breath, count to ten. Count to 10 again! LOL
