ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan 27 (Reuters) - Quantech Ltd <QQQQ.OB>. said Wednesday it is seeking approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market a rapid pregnancy test.
The Quantech pregnancy test measures the levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone secreted by a fertilized egg that is detectable in maternal serum 8 to 10 days after fertilization. The company said the test is regarded as the most definitive diagnostic marker for determining pregnancy. Quantitative hCG tests are also used to diagnose ectopic pregnancy, a leading cause of abdominal pain for women. Pending system clearance, the beta-hCG test will be available on Quantech's DBx rapid diagnostic system.
"Every woman of child-bearing age cared for in the emergency room and given X-rays, medications or procedures that could injure a fetus typically are tested for beta-hCG," said Robert Case, chief executive officer of Quantech. "Rapid, on-site beta-hCG tests will prevent lengthy waits for results from the hospital lab and allow physicians to begin treatment promptly."
Quantech said it is completing commercial development of the DBx system, which will be able to analyze whole blood or urine in less than 20 minutes and perform a wide range of tests commonly ordered in emergency rooms. The first tests scheduled to be available on the system will be the quantitative HCG (pregnancy detection) test, a cardiac panel (CK-MB, troponin I and myoglobin), a white and red blood cell count panel, a coagulation panel and an amylase (pancreatic function) test.
