It is hard to say what he was, other than possibly the finest writer ever to come out of Latin America. He wrote very short, incredibly dense stories, many of which dealt with the labyrinth of time. I thought of him because I read a single story of Lightman's that seemed almost plagiaristically close to a Borges story called The Garden of Forking Paths. Look for a collection called Ficciones, and be prepared to read slowly. Some of the stories are very difficult, some are quite accessible. The one I mentioned is a good starting point, as are The Circular Ruins, The Babylon Lottery, Funes, the Memorious (a fascination speculation on what would happen to the mind of a person who remembered everything), and a number of others. Might want to try in a library first; either you love him or you hate him.
