It sounds like TCI may use MPEG-2 for distribution over satellite, and the cable headend receives it and decodes it to analog for cable distribution. With a DiviCom multiplexer, TCI could squeeze more channels on the transponders. I bet the kids didn't get as excited over the macroblocks as you did!
