This article describes the plight of Indian software professionals who come to America, with glossy dreams of making a fortune and end up making one for others and getting exploited in the process.

Software is a booming market. Entrepreneurs in India start software companies, with just a few computers and then earn thousands by taking advantage of the talents of naive computer graduates. I have worked with a software wizard who was basically a B.S. in Zoology!

A decade ago only students from IITs and other top engineering colleges could dream of setting foot in this country. And even they had to study for a masters or Ph.D. here before getting a job. It was prohibitively expensive and arduous — GRE, TOEFL, admission fees, reference letters, visa, flight fare, working in McDonalds, doing other odd part time jobs, staying in dungeons without heat and hot water facility.

Thanks to the software boom and the tendency of American companies not to hire people permanently, the contracting business burgeoned. It also spawned numerous contracting companies who bring people from India and place them in every corner of the United States, shifting them at the whims and fancy of clients. The Indian professionals who come here lead a gypsy life — wake them from sleep and they can tell you the area code of almost any place — because chances are they have lived there.......
