A train ride from D.C. to NYC is just under 3 hours.

Not the one time I went by train, it took me significantly longer than that. But then driving can also take significantly longer than the 4-5 hours if you are unlucky in terms of traffic (major accident, or you run in to holiday traffic). I've been a passenger on a trip that took something like 12 hours to get to NY. (But 1 - It was Fairfax County to Nassau County, DC area to metro NY, but slightly longer than DC to Manhattan, 2 - It was a holiday with heavy traffic, and 3 - there where quite a few kids and required rest stops)

So I guess I agree with your point, even if my own trip by train was slow.
