This endless assessing is a product of television and cable in particular. That the quality is low should not surprise: How many of the commentariat have served even a minimal hitch? Not me – which is why I load my shows with retired officers when the talk turns to war. Knowing what you don't know is not, however, a widely admired virtue in the media of the new millennium. This new war requires a lot of thinking about very hard subjects that don't make for particularly riveting television because the subject matter simply cannot be done in a four minute package.
