The journalists of the Greatest Generation were by no means saints – one reporter got Patton sacked from the Third Army with a question that opened with a comparison of Nazis in the post-war German government to a "Republican-Democratic election fight" – but they did not constantly opine to the exclusion of reporting. This endless assessing is a product of television and cable in particular. That the quality is low should not surprise: How many of the commentariat have served even a minimal hitch? Not me – which is why I load my shows with retired officers when the talk turns to war. Knowing what you don't know is not, however, a widely admired virtue in the media of the new millennium.

This new war requires a lot of thinking about very hard subjects that don't make for particularly riveting television because the subject matter simply cannot be done in a four minute package. So either the format or the subject must change. Unfortunately, the past two months have seen the latter being thrown overboard. For an effort that will require extraordinary focus, this does not bode well at all.
