86 Diamonds Recovered in 2nd Round of Testing News Release Mr J. David Edwards reports The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism is continuing with the additional testing program at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Pike county near Murfreesboro. This testing is to evaluate the geology and grade of the diamond-bearing reserve at this Arkansas state park. As part of the testing program, diamond sorting was conducted during the week ending December 2 on the diamond-bearing concentrate from trenches No. 2, No. 8, No. 13 and No. 14. A prior sort activity was conducted during the week ending November 1 on the diamond-bearing concentrate from trenches No. 7, No. 12 and No. 11.
The results of the sorting for the four trenches are:
Trench No. 8 ------------ Total Carats Recovered: 6.210 No. of Stones Recovered: 26
Diamonds greater than 0.5 carat, less than 1 carat: 3
Diamonds greater than 1 carat: 0
Trench No. 13 ------------- Total Carats Recovered: 5.659 No. of Stones Recovered: 27
Diamonds greater than 0.5 carat, less than 1 carat: 0
Diamonds greater than 1 carat, less than 2 carats: 1
Trench No. 14 ------------- Total Carats Recovered: 7.157 No. of Stones Recovered: 27
Diamonds greater than 0.5 carat, less than 1 carat: 1
Diamonds greater than 1 carat, less than 2 carats: 1
Trench No. 2 ------------ Total Carats Recovered: 0.301 No. of Stones Recovered: 6
Diamonds greater than 0.5 carat, less than 1 carat: 0
Diamonds greater than 1 carat, less than 2 carats: 0
The company is encouraged by the recovery of 86 diamonds larger than 1mm in size that were found along the eastern margin of the pipe. Of the 86 stones recovered, six were greater than one-half carat in weight and two stones were greater than one carat.
Any material including diamonds less than 1mm in size goes to the tailings dump and is not included in any diamond count. Each trench contains 640 tons of material.
This test represents only a portion of a thorough evaluation program of the whole deposit. The company considers that to date no more than 25% of this occurrence has been evaluated. This particular deposit is extremely heterogeneous on a small scale and these results cannot be extrapolated to encompass the whole occurrence.
The company still considers the Crater of Diamonds to have significant potential. The company believes that future results will lead to the recognition of the source of large gemstones that are known to exist in the pipe. The three largest US diamonds of record, which have all been recovered at the park, had uncut weights of 40.23 carats, 34.25 carats and 17.86 carats.
Trench 99 has been excavated and will be followed by trenches No. 5, No. 3, and No. 6. The next diamond recovery will start in the middle of January 1997.
Star Resources Corp, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Continental Diamonds, is one of two participants that was granted the right to jointly conduct exploration of the Crater of Diamonds State Park by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. Following core-drilling in 1992, the state of Arkansas and the US Department of Interior have approved the phase 2 testing in the Crater of Diamonds State Park.
