Iridium Makes Debut in India Despite Bureaucratic Hurdles

Coinciding with the global launch, the Pune-based Iridium India Telecom Limited (IITL) received the first call at the Rs 180-crore India gateway. ...So far, the government has received 47 applications from prospective Internet service providers which includes AT&T, British Telecom, MCI, Motorola, Compuserve, Bharti BT, Sprint RPG, Datapro, HCL and Satyam Infoway. The private ISPs will have to commence their service within 18 months of signing the licence agreement. While they are free to fix their own tariffs, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) can review and fix tariffs at any time during the validity of the licence. ...
