John - Re:" Will you be able to run standard MSFT apps. on computers with the
Power PC CPU?..."

Simply put - NO. Windows NT applications have to be re-compiled for specific hardware platforms and sold specifically for that platform.

The only exception here would be a software emulation that runs on one platform allowing applications written for a different CPU to execute in "emulation" mode on a host CPU. This process tends to be slow or VERY slow, and has not been real successful with the exception of Apple computer. They provide a good software emulation allowing 68K Mac applications to run on their Power Macs.

A good analogy for emualtion is to watch broadcasts of the United Nations committee meetings. One guy talks real slow while a host of interpreters try to translate his thoughts in semi-real time, into different languages. As you can imagine, the proceedings follow a snail's pace.

DEC may be working on an emulation package allowing Wintel NT applications to run on an Alpha PC. This will be convenient for those who need an Alpha workstation/server for its inherent value.

Regarding Wintel - Microsoft knows that the only platform in humongous volume is Intel x86. They assist DEC, MIPS, IBM to help port NT to their respective architectures, but they don't seem to provide a lot of application support for their (Microsoft's) NT products on non x86 platforms.

The ACE initiative from several years ago (MIPS/COMPAQ/HP/NT) was put in place to de-throne Intel. Heard of the ACE intiative lately?
