The people who go to computer shows are a very small number of atypical users, I agree. However they are often people in a position to influence the buying decisions of many relatively less knowledgeable buyers, as they often have a reputation for expertise and are consulted by other making buying decisions. Also, often they are the "screwdriver guys" who build systems for other people. So they are important out of proportion to their numbers. And I can assure you that these were "mainstream" shows, very typical of this type of show (I go to perhaps two dozen show a year).

As for paranoia, Intel is most paranoid regarding technical developments and OEM relationships. They are not at all paranoid about mass market broadcast advertising. They have never had to be: This will be the first year that ANY competitor has done ANY significant national television advertising. In general, Intel I give Intel high marks for its consumer marketing including the "Intel Inside" campaign and POP displays. However I think that the TV advertising and the trade show advertising (especially the Comdex presentations of the past 2-3 years) has been unfocused, with not much of a message conveyed poorly. You may disagree, this is just my opinion.
