The economy isnt doing badly now except for the jobs picture. And you are right that will change eventually but for it really to benefit Bush it has to change within the next couple of months. IMO this was the first critical month because there is a clear two man race now. Watch the dems reaction today. Bush=Hoover. Worst loss of jobs since hoover and bush cant just say that he inherited a bad economy or blame it on 9/11 or the bubble even if its all true. Sometimes americans want red meat and dems will give it to them with tax cuts for the rich, no jobs program, no extension of unemp bennys, job outsourcing, huge deficits, etc. Bush is going to have to attack this issue and not sit idly by month after month waiting for a better report. And as i understand it for job growth to be meaningful you will have to get to 250K/month.
Also what the dems are doing in demOgoguing on jobs is to drive down consumer confidence among others by painting this bleak picture of the overall economy which is false. A self fulfilling prophecy methinks. mike
