We underestimated people's sensitivities

This was an interesting comment. It makes me think of several issues that are swirling around right now, all of which seem to have to do with "sensitivities". For instance, some of the responses to the Bush ads--not the ones that are obviously out to get Bush politically-- but those of relatives and workers who feel that the deaths are being politicized and used for his personal gain and that there were less offensive ways to present Bush's strengths than the one chosen. Or the Jewish response to the Passion, which some Christians think is an oversensitivity.
We had breakfast the other day with an old friend who is very active in the ADL. He is a brilliant, wonderful man and he is offended by what he feels are stereotypes of Jews in the movie. He says they have had reports of antiSemitism resulting from it. Kholt tells me that surveys show it is a small percentage; I don't know when a percentage becomes significant.
Gays have made enormous strides in having civil unions accepted, but are pushing the envelope (legally and emotionally) with the marriage issue. The sensibilities of many who are trying to be fair in spite of personal opinions are offended.

It is a hard line to find-- making points without offending SOMEone's sensibilities. But in the case of that cartoon, it seems a bright line to me. It was just nasty.
