Its not just about how much money we spend on defense but the kind influence the industry has on the American psyche. My argument is that the defense industry has grown significantly in importance since WW II and has greater sway over the American POV than it had 50 years ago.

Influence over the American psyche" is not something that you can have objective numbers on, but it seems unreasonable to say that military concerns have more influence on our psyche then in the height of the cold war, and ridiculous to say that they are a bigger part of our psyche then during WWII, when the whole country was mobilized behind the war.

So much so that its become okay to invade foreign countries at the drop of a hat.

It wasn't at the drop of a hat, not even close.

Even if it was, willingness to invade isn't the same thing as influence of the military, or the military industrial complex, or the total level of impact of military issues on the American psyche. You can have strong willingness to invade with only a minimal impact on the mental space of most citizens, you can also have strong reluctance to invade despite massive focus on the military and military concerns by most citizens. I wouldn't go as far as to say there is no connection at all between the ideas, but they are clearly two different ideas.
