Thanks for your long and thoughtful reply. I recognize your viewpoint as the standard one among those who accept the Eden story as something more than allegory. I offer different (but also non-allegorical) viewpoints not to advance them as truth, but to stimulate thought and maybe show some of the absurdities that arise when the story is viewed as history.

Here is something that bakes my noodle when thinking of the story from your stance... What was the tree of life made for in the first place? If death was not present in the garden prior to Adam and Eve's crime, then what purpose did it serve? Was it just to give something for an angel to guard in case Adam ate the other fruit? Surely God could have made fruits that were pleasing to the eye and taste without giving them magical properties that were unnecessary before the fall, and undesirable (from God's viewpoint, anyway) after the fall.

And another deep question... Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?
