Beating estimates that were drastically reduced. Like from 19 cents to 4 cents.

The 4 cents per share estimate was down from the 19 cents analysts were forecasting before HP's warning, Thomson Financial/First Call said.

Third-quarter profits fell 89 percent at Hewlett-Packard Co. because of weak technology spending worldwide, but the results posted by the computer and printer giant Thursday beat Wall Street's dramatically reduced expectations.

What's so positive about the guidance given today ?

"We are managing through what is clearly a significant global economic downturn, and our results reflect this tough environment," said Carly Fiorina, chairwoman and chief executive officer. "However, we are seeing positive signs that our efforts to transform our business and improve our execution are gaining traction, and we continue to make strategic moves to fuel growth."

What exactly does the above statement translate to in DOLLARS ?? What are the positive signs ? Does "gaining traction" mean orders confirmed ? And what's HP transforming into ?
