Hi kumar_rangan; As a youth, my mother had whole milk delivered, skimmed the cream, and made butter. It was probably very good tasting, but to young boys, anything tastes good, provided there's enough of it. (And that means a lot.)

But I don't recall any need to add a component of the previous day's yogurt. Instead, I remember that you just shook the hell out of the cream. My mother also made yogurt, and it was easily the sweetest (unsweetened) yogurt I've ever tasted. She was extremely "anal" about making sure her yogurt starter was kept pure, which is what she said was the secret.
