Broadband from Fortune: "Broadband also requires a whole new generation of chips and chipmakers, such as Broadcom, the red-hot maker of integrated circuits used in cable modems and all sorts of other applications. Run by gonzo CEO Henry Nicholas, BRCM is up from $40 to $180 over the past year. Silicon Valley's Roger McNamee is even more excited by PMC-Sierra and JDS Uniphase. Rog characterizes PMC-Sierra as "wildly important in this business." As for JDS Uniphase: "I'm kicking myself for not getting into this one." PMC-Sierra makes semi components that improve speed on the Internet. JDS Uniphase makes chips that allow companies to send more info over optical fiber without having to lay more cable.
