It might be interesting to see if Frist got the upper hand by lining up 2 or 3 party conversions. The Democrat Senate meltdown is still scheduled for the first few days in January, when the Marxist/Leninist left must test the opportunists to see if they can still drive them as hard as they did from the Jeffords move to the end of the session.

Zell Miller, for example, could pick up a larger % of black votes in GA, as a Republican or "independent", if he emerges as the guy who finished off Lott by joining the caucus. OTOH, if he stays a Democrat, he runs for re-election in GA under the Bush landslide there approaching 70%, and against the clout of Ralph Reid, who now OWNS GA politics.

A Republican who bags even one conversion gets the leadership almost by default. Bag two or more, and it puts him right in the 2008 presidential sweepstakes (with a bag-ee possibly on the ticket, too).

We ALL know the catnip that Senators dream of every night...
