How can he be plausibly regarded as a closet racist over this? He wasn't thinking about Strom's platform when he said what he said. I know about Strom's platform, and I'm highly critical, but if at a birthday party someone says to ba old guy "Gosh it would have been great if you'd been president, we wouldn't have all these problems we have today" I wouldn't think he was talking about race. WE have lots of huge problems, most of them are not racial problems. And old men hearken back to a golden time that never was very golden for everyone (women too). I see it all the time on SI. People are always saying how wonderful some time in the past was. And they simply don't remember the negatives. Strom's presidential platform wasn't on anyone's mind at that birthday party (I would bet). Now Lott might have done other things that lead you to think he is racist- but so have other politicians from other parties.

If the republicans have a need for a blood sacrifice over this, in order to appease the media, Lott will have to go. But it isn't fair.
