You made me smile--
Did you really hear Rachmaninoff live?
I would love to have seen his hands. Lizst's too. Big, big hands. I wanted so badly to play Liszt, but some of his pieces take a span of a twelfth! When I was in the 7th grade, I insisted on learning Rach's famous variation on Paganini's Theme. It was way beyond me, not technically, but emotionally. I had heard an older student play it the year before and fallen in love with it. My teacher was not excited- but I insisted. After the recital, the more advanced student, whom I greatly admired, said to me, very cooly, "Well, that was---interestingly played." I was devastated. I never touched the piece again.
