Pentium II & NLX system boards

DOWNLOAD Makers expect impact from Intel's new chipsets
Intel has announced its i740 AGP graphics 440BX AGP chipsets that can greatly improve Pentium II performance over the current 440LX. The i740 chip, starting at 2-speed, may increase Intel's influence over AGP and 3D graphics. Asustek, one of the leading system board vendors, has no plan to develop a system board with built-in i740. It has vowed to become one of the top graphics card vendors in Taiwan by doubling its current graphics card output to some 200,000 units by the end of 1998.

In addition to 3D graphics, the i740 will add multimedia features, like video capture and hardware (or software) MPEG-2 decoding. This makes the chip more flexible in addressing various market niches.

According to Intel, the chip is priced at $34.75 in 10,000-piece quantities. The overall costs of i740 AGP cards will range from $50-something to $120 or more depending on features included. The FOB price of a simple graphics card with i740 AGP will be priced from around $80. More will be charged depending on overheads and extra features (like TV output or hardware DVD decoding). This price structure is equivalent to current high-end 3D cards, like those from 3Dlabs or ATI.
