Internet guru banks on backbones

The Internet and
the backbone
networks that
constitute it are
playing an
ever-greater role in
the day-to-day jobs
of corporate network
managers. With
intranets, extranets,
virtual private
networks, electronic
commerce, push
technologies, and just plain access all becoming mission-critical to the
enterprise, the capabilities of the Internet backbone have become
paramount.

Vint Cerf, the fabled "father of the Internet" and senior vice president of
Internet architecture and engineering at MCI Telecommunications Corp.,
has embarked on a quest to expand and develop his company's Internet
backbone, which is growing to dual OC-12 (622Mbps) connections and
may reach gigabit speeds by this time next year. And work to bridge
MCI's Internet and public switched telephone networks
(PSTNs)--under a project called Vault--is about to come to fruition
with outsourced services to be made available this winter.

LAN Times Senior Editor Brian Riggs discussed MCI's backbone plans
with Cerf at last month's International Telecommunication Union's
Telecom Inter@ctive conference in Geneva.

LAN Times: Where is MCI in deploying branded services based on the
Vault architecture?

Vint Cerf: Our call centers are now being deployed with Vault
technology and we will be offering this as a service starting in the fourth
quarter [this year].
