PR Newswire - May 14, 1998 11:51
New Station Will Uplink Dozens of Channels of Entertainment For Reception on Home Satellite Dishes
ATLANTA, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta announced today that it has been selected by DACOM Corporation to build a satellite uplink earth station in Korea to support DACOM's upcoming plans to launch as many as 80 channels of DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) services for reception by homes and businesses using satellite dishes.
Scientific-Atlanta will provide, install, and commission all RF equipment for transmitting the signals to deliver the multiple channels of programming being distributed using eight transponders on the Orion 3 satellite. The uplink station, located in a Seoul suburb, is scheduled for operation in October 1998. Once the station is operational, DACOM plans to roll out its DBS services throughout Korea.
"Scientific-Atlanta has been awarded the DACOM DBS uplink based on our comprehensive evaluation of their experience with RF facilities, digital transmission links, and satellite networks," said Mr. Seong-Ho, Kang, manager of international procurement for DACOM Corporation. "We chose Scientific- Atlanta for this important project with the expectation that they will make the same contribution to our DBS project that their PowerVu(R) products made to our Satellite News Gathering (SNG) capabilities."
"Our decades of experience in establishing satellite earth station uplink facilities around the world help us anticipate and meet the challenges whenever a company like DACOM establishes a new service," said Mark Chiknas, director of satellite television network sales, Asia-Pacific region for Scientific-Atlanta. "The new DBS uplink facility will enable DACOM to deliver increased programming to its viewers and make full use of its Ku-Band transponders on the Orion 3 satellite."
DACOM currently owns and operates nine Satellite News Gathering vans equipped with Scientific-Atlanta's PowerVu MPEG-2/DVB digital video compression technology.
DACOM Corporation is a privately held provider of telecommunications services, and the second largest provider of domestic and international telecommunications services in Korea.
