From the standpoint of an Intel investor, I am mostly interested in how much profit Intel can make off an expanding PC market. The sub $1000 computer will not be highly profitable to anybody including Intel. The big profit margins are in the top end machines. Unlike telephones, many people have no real use for a computer. In fact many of the people buying them now are doing it with their children in mind thinking it some kind of magic talisman that will give them smarter kids. The internet,e-mail, digital photography are simply uninteresting to a large part of the population. If the PC ever reaches nearly 100% of the population, it won't look like a PC and may not have an Intel microprocessor.
People mostly buy a computer to do certain tasks. Software drives hardware and vice versa. Since present computers can do the tasks available with present software, new killer aps are essential. Where would the PC be without spreadsheets and word processors? I doubt that increased graphics use alone is enough to keep the PC revolution on the fast track, at least in countries like the USA. Fortunatally, foreign countries are still an expanding market. Intel gets half its business outside the United States.
I have faith that the creative genius at work in the industry will eventually produce new aps that will persuade people to buy newer faster PC's. This is happening in the business world now, but in the purview of individuals there are few really new applications at this time.
