Ariba Sets Benchmark Tool
By Chuck Moozakis
Ariba Monday said it has teamed up with the Center for Advanced Purchasing Studies (CAPS) to give companies a benchmarking tool aimed at improving how enterprises buy goods and services electronically.

Dubbed eC3, the benchmarking project is based on the Center's existing manual benchmarking process, along with Ariba's Benchmarking Scorecard analysis. The two organizations have been developing the tool for the past six months, they said.

The benchmarking tool is focused on three areas: measurement, comparison and improvement. Enterprises using the tool should be able to measure how their existing e-procurement projects compare with those mounted by industry competitors. The tool will also define the key goals companies have to reach in order to successfully manage an online buying strategy, the companies said.

Ariba said participation in eC3 is open to large companies--regardless of which e-procurement vendor they may use--at no charge.

The company said it will post the project's specifications and data definitions on the CAPS research Web site (www.capsresearch.org) on Aug. 24.

CAPS, based in Tempe, Ariz., is affiliated with Arizona State University and the National Association of Purchasing Management.
