From personal experience, I served 6-years on active duty USAF and after SEA was released to the inactive reserve -- and optional active reserve assignment.

There was a 6-year obligation for USAF pilots and a little less for non-rated officers. Considering attendance and behavioral issues being raised, I was wondering if there was perhaps a minimum active-reserve duty obligation for naval officers and if Kerry made himself an exception to those rule as well?
