Japan's PC Sales Decline Sharply August 20, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Sales of personal computers in Japan in the fifth week of July (July 23-29, 2001) declined sharply from the previous week.
Japan's PC sales showed a 17.4 percent decrease in units and a decline of 18.1 percent in value from the previous week. Compared to the same week last year (July 24-30, 2000), sales fell 16.0 percent in units and 20.4 percent in value. The average unit sales price for the fifth week was 181,258 yen, down 1,561 yen from the previous week's 182,819 yen. (119.89 yen = US$1)
These findings are from a survey conducted by GfK Marketing Services Japan Ltd., an information service company that collects POS data from 3,400 large-volume home appliance stores.
Sales of notebook PCs, which had been relatively favorable in recent weeks, fell 15.5 percent, marking a decrease from the same period last year. Compared to the previous year's figures, Japan's notebook PC sales showed a temporary decline in the beginning of this year's summer sales season from the fourth week of May to the second week of June. This is mainly because the new models in 2001 were released one week later than those of last year.
In the fifth week of July, the PC sales fell, declining below the figure for the same week in 2000. Desktop PC sales faced a more serious decrease of 20 percent from the previous week, and a 30.6 percent decline from the same week last year. |
