Multi-media Products

In the second half of 1997, the two months late arrival of the VCD player sales high season triggered intense pricing pressure on the PRC market. A vicious price war was prevalent in October and November and despite sales volume increase, margins have suffered. As a result, the division's profit in the first half period was more than offset by losses in the second half. Depressed prices continued after the Lunar New Year and competition endured. The new SMC DVD player was introduced in the PRC market in advance of other competitors in the first quarter of 1998. The division will introduce new low cost model VCD players and will focus on strengthening cost control in 1998. SMC will continue to focus on the development of the audio and home theatre products market in the PRC.

The Group has made substantial investments in the multi-media products division for marketing promotions and reinforcement of engineering professional resources for the development of new technology products. These investments are for the long term return and the Group is confident that the division's prospects are positive.
