The modern civilized world has placed religion in the marginal position it deserves

I strongly disagree with THAT statement (my original reference was to "chuch or temple", not "religion")

"Religion" first and foremost refers to acknowledgement of a supernatural power as the Creator of life and the universe; and only secondly to a particular belief system (e.g., Christianity).

Religious belief is not being marginalized in the modern world. If we measure it by church membership (the only available measurement), it is growing, not declining. As China modernizes, church membership is growing:

Nevertheless, membership data on religious organizations in China suggests that the practice of religion continues to increase and the number of religious adherents continues to grow.
