Let's make one thing perfectly and unambiguously clear: the software interfaces used to connect customers to AOL have nothing to do with the open standards of the internet and they are a dead-end. I suppose if they even made what would seem an obvious attempt to allow third party developers to enhance their browser and to establish AOL services they might of had a chance in hell; they did not.

Now let's make another crystal clear assertion: the basic connection to the internet does not rely on the provider to generate one iota of content. As a matter of fact, they will provide the added value of a nice set of services but that is only the proverbial tip of the iceberg. 99% of the content you speak of will be developed by local internet content developers using tools from Microsoft, Borland or whomever. Businesses do not need to go through Microsoft or AT&T or whomever to setup a presence on the internet. Consumers do not need any particular service to access these points of presence.

The one and only thing of value AOL has is a large customer base and that is certainly worth a considerable amount. They now have another free training program after which the new, 50 free hour, users will feel comfortable enough to drop it and move to a cheaper service.

In closing: do not confuse the hoaky web pages we see today with what is just around the corner. Thousands of developers will provide tools and content for the internet. Zero will provide if for AOL.
