MPEG-2 4:2:2 and the EBU

By Gordon Drury, NDS and Claude Stoffel, EBU

The summer of 1998 promises to be a sports lover's dream. As teamsfrom around the world compete for the football World Cup in France, cyclists race for the yellow jersey in the Tour de France and tennisplayers smash their way to glory at ATP events and the French Open, theEuropean Broadcasting Union will be where the action is, deliveringgripping coverage of these major sporting events. The EBU is no stranger toproviding footage of major events, but this year will be different. For these major 1998 sporting highlights and for many other news, sportsand cultural TV coverage opportunities, the EBU will be using its newdigital transmission network, based on NDS' MPEG-2 4:2:2 solution. The NDSequipment is being used in the digitisation of the EBU's Eurovisiontransmission network. The digitisation will increase the EBU's networkcapacity from 13 TV channels to over 20 and will incorporate 55 transmitand receive earth stations.

In July 1997 the EBU and NDS started tests of the 4:2:2 digital solution inconjunction with major broadcasters such as SVT, YLE and the BBC. Theperformance and reliability of the reference chain proved excellent and theEBU decided to implement the NDS 4:2:2 solution in the 48 countries of theEurovision Network, which includes 55 earth stations. The network will befully digital by September 1998.
