I really believe kids subconciously look around when they hit puberty and decide how they want to go.

That was very true in my case. I decided what I wanted in the sixth grade. The actual path I took veered off a bit because that's where the jobs were, but I still spent my life in the woods.

Back on the original point, I think Middle Schools put too much freedom in the hands of kids who still need more guidance from an authority figure like they had in grade school. It was intended as a transition to high school.

I had such a transition because my freshman year was segregated from the brand new highschool where the upper classmen were. One year is enough. Middle School starts too early.
