The right to keep and bear arms is a very fundamental safeguard against the liberal drive to constrict free speech by enacting such things as the "Fairness Doctrine," laws against free speech disguised as anti-hate speech, and making the populace dependent on the government for protection against criminals and itself. The Bill of Rights enumerates principles that the founders wanted immutable. Liberals keep trying to change that by chipping away in little nibbles. Once lost, such rights are impossible to regain, short of revolution.
