Get down into the nitty-gritty of some ad hoc campaign material circulated in South Carolina when Bush really really needed to defeat McCain. Or, simply recall that Bush never declared his opposition to the use of the Confederate flag on State Buildings. To alot of people, such a display does not derive from apolitical academic historical interest, but is code for nostalgia for a racist past, not too far removed from Lott's ill-conceived comments about Thurmond, a South Carolinian. Bush needed the votes.
