That sounds right to me. The other point is that, even when a company recognizes a problem, there is often a massive amount of inertia in the organization, so their attempts to fix it are ineffectual, year after year. Just like Compaq has realized for years that Dell had a better business model, but because Compaq was wedded to their legacy sales channels, they have been unable to imitate Dell.
