I think China's leaders are well aware of their pollution problems and want to deal with them. The problem for them is that they've got a tiger by the tail with their booming country of a billion+ people, and don't want to screw it up. More than a billion+ people's lives, welfare and future depend on it.

For instance. they are going to shut down all the polluting factories in the cities where the Olympics will be during the Olympics. So, they are well aware of the pollution.

Their cars will be more fuel efficient and cleaner than most of the cars we Americans drive. They will start where we are now, and get better from there.
