RE: Whatever happened to the patent sale?

One of the first round bidders (Intel, AMD, Motorola, etc.) bought the whole thing -- all 45 patents (there were some doozies including what looks like a Merced blocker) for $5.1 million.
Intel's prudential and prehensile touch is suspected, but no one who knows is saying. If Intel got them it will lengthen the FTC investigation interminably. ("...substantially to lessen competition or tend to create a monopoly" are the operative Clayton Act words). The purchase of the last assets of Exponential will be interpreted as an acquisition subject to Sec. 7 and within the jurisdiction of the FTC.
