To Guy and all Iomegans:
Guy, I am not sure if your post regarding un-manufacturable LS-120 is tongue and cheek or not but it did trigger a thought.
When ZIP first came on the market, IOMEGANs rushed to all the local stores and reported availability, price points, sales data etc. etc. I think it is time to do the same exercise again for two purposes. First, how many OEM machines are now on the market with ZIPs and how are they selling. I remember someone mentioning that approximately 25% of Micron's machines go out with a zip. Can we confirm this and others?
Secondly, we need to find out how many Compaq machines now have LS-120 and how they are selling.
The reason for this exercise is simple. If OEM PCs with ZIP is selling well, then all the OEMs would have to add the ZIP option to more models, if not the entire line. If ZIP is selling well, is it possible that a purchaser would not buy a Compaq, because ZIP is not available? This would be detrimental to Compaq, especially if their corporate customers all want a zip drive and all compaq can suggest is, "go buy an external and plug it in yourself." I am sure Compaq is looking for the same data. They are not going to risk their market share because they don't offer the state of the art component.
On the other hand, if Compaq has plenty of LS-120 available and is selling extremely well, then Iomega's dream of setting industry standard with the ZIP is over.
This battle is going on right now. If Compaq surrenders and signs on with IOMEGA .........
