These kids aren't really smartasses - this is how they're trained. If you bust a crack head, rather that incarcerate him and cost the county money supporting him for the length of his jail term, they get him to snitch and cut a deal and give him probation. If you bust someone for a traffic infraction, you are bringing money INTO the county. I was sitting in the courtroom one day talking to the bailiff one day and he said "We ought to pull in at least $25,000 in this room today". Guilt or innocence didn't matter. Anyone without a personal lawyer was found guilty. Before the court was in session the ADA came out of the judges chambers, took the podium, and informed the room: "If you plead guilty, we will give you a fine. If you ask for a trial, we will hit you with a stiffer fine. If you ask for a jury trial, we will throw the book at you". In other words, unless you pay a lawyer $1.500 to beat a $500 fine you're GOING to be found guilty! The police are trained to be fund raisers for the county. When it comes to handling a real crime they are a bunch of buffoons! I'm not talking about just the officers - the detective squad with their 20+ years experience is just as stupid. Occasionally, someone gets convicted of a violent crime around here.....but not often and not unless they are REALLY dumb!
