Hi Gordon, Let me begin with an item perhaps already posted somewhere that I received by Fax:

CTX 05/09 (MTG) US DOD: Navy announces projects selected ....

May 9, 1997, M2 Communications - The Department of the Navy announced today the 14 Navy projects selected for negotiation under the Commercial Operations and Support Savings Inititiative (COSSI) of the Dual Use Applications Program (DUAP)......

An example: Lithium Ion Polmer Battery-- Alliant TechSystems and Valence Technology- This project will replace Zinc-Silver olxide batteries in three Navy underwater vehicles (the MK-30 target, MK-8 Seal Delivery Vehicle, and the ASDS) with commercial lithium Ion Polymer batteries.

These systems procure $5M plus of batteries per year because of finite recharge cycles and wet life requiring their replacement every 12 to 18 months. Lithium ion batteries will provide over 10 times the cycle life of the silver-zinc.

To answer your questions-

1-I believe that for now, the company will concentrate on making cells in high volume and will leave their assembly into batteries and battery packs to OEM customers. Remember there is still charging circuitry to be integrated.

2-I understand that line 1 is the new design to facilitate changeovers to different products. I would guess that a change from laptop to cellphone cells could be done in an 8hr shift. High speed lines 2-4 however, were not designed for such easy changeover, and could take much longer.

3-I agree with Mort Cohen's assessment- that ULBI's laptop production is now committed entirely to 1 OEM for several years. At the moment, the remaining OEM's must look to VLNC for a chance to obtain Li-ion Polymer cells with their capability of squeezing approx 25% more electrolyte in a rectangular(prismatic) space.

I believe their are many OEM's anxious to commit VLNC's production for their products, as it would give them a competitive edge.
