Concealing the subject's political affiliation On CNN Tuesday I watched Judy Woodruff interview the parents of a military reservist who were upset that their son was being sent off to Iraq on short notice. I can only imagine how it feels to watch one's son go off to war and I can only respect the parents' concern for their son and his young family. <font size=4> But there was something odd about the issues the parents raised. They were upset that they didn't know exactly what their son was going to be doing and they feared he wasn't getting enough training for his mission. What do these people expect? We're at war. There will not be parental orientation sessions as if the soldiers are going off to college. War is dangerous and unpredictable. No soldier is ever perfectly trained for what he will encounter. Reserves are being called up because we need more troops in the theater. Zarqawi is not going to take a time-out so we can give all of our replacement troops an extra six months of training. The outrage over insufficient information to meet the parental comfort level seemed to have been at once too histrionic and too calculated. The CNN report identified the parents as Tom and Kathie Bunch of Chillicothe, OH. A little bit of googling reveals that this was part of an orchestrated P.R. campaign: <font color=blue><font size=3> A local couple is making news as they speak out about how the call-up of more than 5,000 members of the Individual Ready Reserves is affecting their family. Kathie and Tom Bunch, of Cattail Road, headed to Columbus Thursday to sit down with reporters and record a segment to be used on several news stations where they talk about the deployment of their 29-year-old son, Jon <font color=black> I wish Jon Bunch the best of luck in his mission and a safe and speedy return. <font size=4>But I have to wonder whether Kathie and Tom Bunch's media interviews might somehow be related to electoral politics. As it turns out, Tom Bunch is Judge Thomas E. Bunch, an elected member of the Chillicothe Municipal Court. The office is nominally non-partisan, but Ohio campaign finance records indicate that the only candidates Judge and Mrs. Bunch ever contribute to are Democrats. The Bunch's organized news appearances aren't necessarily motivated by a partisan political agenda, but it would be helpful if CNN and the print journalists who cover the story give their audiences more of the background so we can, uh, judge for ourselves. <font size=3> thatliberalmedia.com
