don lane: RE: <CNBC Bear Party today>

Within this past week, PBS aired a National Geographic special on "The Bears of Kamchapka Pininsula" (Siberia) - a huge bear preserve. This is a place where bears have not yet learned to fear mankind. Seems this couple goes there every season to study the behavior of bears. They even successfully raised 3 orphaned bears.

They found that BEARS ARE VERY INTELLIGENT and CURIOUS ANIMALS (as I suspect that you've found in your studies of bears). WHEN CONFRONTED BY A BEAR, the worst thing you could do is show fear and run. THE THING TO DO IS stand still and just GLARE AT THE BEAR (as you did this morning watching the CNBC program)- the bear might come up to you and sniff you and then walk away (I would never have the guts to test this, for sure). If you're in shallow water, splashing the water with your hand indicates your desire to play to the bear. In response, the bear will start to clown around while you stand the glaring. Don't laugh while the bear clowns, just smile very gradually and keep glaring - a little praying can't hurt either :-)
